Apteryx II

Back when I was in college, I took part in the iDevGames 2002 Macintosh game-writing contest. Apteryx was my entry. The original was written in about six weeks, and did not run on Mac OS X.

After learning to use the SDL graphics library, I decided to re-make Apteryx using SDL, which will allow it to run on nearly any OS. Apteryx II is the result. It is a fully playable port of the old game, minus a few niceties like mouse control and key customization. Eventually I hope to add new weapons and new enemies, create a new map editor, and revamp the graphics.

See the screenshots for more information on game play, or read the (somewhat outdated) original documentation.

Game basics: To pass through this force field...

... the player must destroy this switch ...

... by convincing the drone to crash into it.

Most of the strategy of the game involves figuring out a way, for each switch, to get one of the nearby drones to crash into it - without crashing into the player first!
